Eight jokers sit in the 152-tile American wall, and they are the single biggest reason the game plays differently from every other mahjong. They are also surrounded by one rule that decides more hands than any other, and that almost every new player gets wrong.
The rule
A joker stands in only inside a block of three or more identical tiles. That is the whole rule, and everything below is a consequence of it.
- Never a pair. Two is not three.
- Never a single.
- Never a mixed block. 2468 is four different tiles; NEWS is four different winds. Neither contains a group of identical tiles, so neither takes a joker.
- Yes to pungs, kongs and quints — three, four or five of the same tile.
A quint is five identical tiles and there are only four of any tile in the wall, so a quint is impossible without a joker. Those lines are a bet that you can hold or steal one.
What that does to the card
Read the card with that rule in mind and it sorts itself into two halves. Lines built from pungs and kongs are rescuable; lines built from pairs, singles and mixed blocks are not. Which is why Singles & Pairs pays the most — it is jokerless from end to end, and no amount of luck with wild tiles will carry you through it.
The practical version: a rack holding two jokers should be looking hard at pungs and kongs. A rack holding none should stop pretending it is going to finish a quint.
The joker exchange
You can take other people's jokers. On your turn — and only on your turn — if any exposed group on the table has a joker doing the job of a tile you are holding, swap your real tile in and take the joker into your hand.
It is the best-value move in the game, it costs you a tile you were only holding anyway, and it is the thing new players most often walk past. Look at every exposure on the table at the start of each of your turns; that habit alone is worth a hand a night.
The jokerless bonus
At most tables a winning hand with no joker in it at all pays double. Singles & Pairs lines are exempt — they can't contain one, so the bonus would be automatic rather than earned.
This is a real strategic fork rather than a footnote. Late in a hand, a joker that completes your line and a natural tile that completes the same line are not worth the same thing, and the gap is the whole payout again.
When to hold and when to spend
- A joker you never spend is worth nothing. It scores no points sitting in your rack.
- Expose late. A joker in an exposure is a joker anyone can come and take off you.
- Count what is gone. Eight is not many across four players, and once they are on the table in exposures they are targets rather than assets.
Common questions
Can you use a joker on a pair in American mahjong?
No. This is the rule beginners get wrong most often. A joker only stands in inside a group of three or more identical tiles. A pair is two, so a joker can never fill one — and that is exactly why the Singles & Pairs section of the card pays the most.
Can you use a joker in a run like 2468?
No. A block written 2468 is four different tiles, so there is no group of identical tiles for a joker to join. Same for NEWS. Jokers only work where a block is three or more of the same tile.
How many jokers are in an American mahjong set?
Eight, in a wall of 152 tiles. No other mahjong tradition uses them at all.
Can you take a joker from someone else?
Yes — that is the joker exchange. On your turn, if an exposed group anywhere on the table has a joker standing in for a tile you hold, put your real tile in and take the joker. It is free value and beginners forget it exists.
Is a hand with no jokers worth more?
At most tables, yes: a winning hand containing no joker pays double. Singles & Pairs hands are exempt, because they are jokerless by construction and would otherwise collect the bonus for free.
